Book of Shadows

The Book of Shadows is a central text for Wiccan practitioners, traditionally serving as a personal collection of spells, rituals,1 and religious texts2 for coven-based or solo practitioners. It was first introduced into Wiccan practice by founder Gerald Gardner in the 1950s, and he claimed that the practice of Witches keeping such a book was an ancient practice, with said book being burned after the death of the owner.3 In modern times, since Wicca is mainly an individual practice rather than a coven-based one, the Book of Shadows functions more as the personal journal of the witch.4 Inside, one is to document their unique journey in the practice and “a private record for recording spells, honoring your traditions, and growing your connection to Spirit.”5
